Message from the Hon. Minister
Constitutional Change and National Integration
“It is our hope that this website of the Ministry of Constitutional Affairs and National Integration will help expand and enrich the prevailing discourse regarding the pressing need for constitutional change in Sri Lanka, with special attention to the powers now vested in the Executive Presidency, necessary reforms in the electoral system and the establishment of peace. There is the expectation that that the anticipated constitutional changes will also contribute to strengthen the rights of the individual, as well a groups and widen the scope of protecting the fundamental rights of the citizen, leading to good governance, greater accountability and a more meaningful democracy, drawing strength from the best values of a rich heritage and the exemplary qualities of modern democracies. |

This is the first time that there is a special ministry for National Integration in Sri Lanka. We trust that constitutional change will also help contribute to bringing about a greater measure of national integration. The highest priority is being given to national integration today, to help our nation rise above the many divisive forces that have led to widespread mistrust among our peoples. We look forward to this website contributing in a substantial manner to re-affirm the values of Sri Lanka being a country with a multi-lingual, multi-religious and multi-cultural society where one is able to celebrate true unity in diversity.”
