National Integration Activities | Mobile Service | National Integration Program Unit
   
 

During the time period 1st January - 31st December 2007 NIPU will undertake programmes focusing on the current status of the problem of national integration in Sri Lanka:

1. National Reconciliation through inter religious dialogues
2. National Integration through language and culture
3. National Integration through the promotion of public culture of pluralism
4. National Integration through constructive handling of differences and conflicts
5. Promotion of national reconciliation among the war-affected North-East communities
6. Sinhala-Tamil integration in the Plantation areas
7. Coordination, Monitoring and Research Unit at NIPU



  Programme No-02:
 
  1. Name of the Programme
    National Integration through Language and Culture

  2. Goal
    Promotion of sustainable ethnic harmony and National Integration in Sri Lanka

    Promotion of understanding of cultural and spiritual values in different linguistic and cultural communities

  3. Objectives/ Activities
    • Establish Advisory Board

    • Continue language classes with clergy of different religions and conduct courses on conflict transformation skills

    • Continue language classes for public servants who have to work amidst multi lingual communities

    • Organize workshops, seminars and syllabi on national integration, culture of language and cultural diversity

    • Establish Forums with the joint participation of clergy and the public servants

    • Train Language Instructors

    • Provide language training and conflict transformation skills for clergy and public servants throughout the island

    • Develop syllabi for clergy and public servants on conflict resolution and national integration

    • Incorporate the language classes organized for clergy and public servants gradually into the formal system of language education conducted by the religious educational institutions and the public institutions

  4. Target Groups

    • Clergy
      Clergy constitutes a crucial factor in promoting National Integration and ethnic harmony in Sri Lanka. Hence clergy members will be the most important target group of this programme.

    • Public Servants
      Sinhala and Tamil speaking Public Servants including members of security forces will be assisted to learn Sinhala / Tamil.
