Following activities have been completed during the year 2005.

  • Teaching Tamil language for Buddhist Monks, which was started in 2001, is continued in 62 Pirivenas situated in bilingual Divisional Secretariat areas.  The aim of the ongoing programme is to promote peace and harmony among the communities through the enhanced bilingual skills of Buddhist Monks.  The Ministry pays allowances for the teachers, and progress is monitored by the National Integration Promotion Assistants attached to the Divisional Secretariats.
  • A Basic Tamil Language Course for the staff of the Ministry was completed successfully and 13 members who attended the 56 hours course received their certificates from the Hon. Minister recently. The 2nd course also commenced on 29th September.
  • A Pilot Project for Quick Impact Trilingual Training for the Front Office Staff of the Public Sector was conducted at Uva Provincial Training Centre in June.  The three day residential programme was attended by 50 Receptionists and Telephone Operators selected from the Districts of Badulla and Monaragala.
  • Several Mobile Services have been conducted for the acceptance of applications, issuance of documents such as Birth, Death and Marriage Certificates, Identity Cards, Driving Licenses, Passports, G.C.E. O/L & A/L Examination Certificates, Pensions and EPF/ETF etc. for the internally displaced people.  Subsequently the Mobile Services was extended to the Plantation Sector as well, upon the requests received from some Districts.  The National Integration Division took necessary step to gather the relevant institutions under one roof to provide the speedy and efficient services to the needy.
  • The Tsunami affected persons were also served by several “On the Spot Services” in the Districts of Ampara, Galle, Hambantota and Matara.  The Government and the UNDP funded the above services.  The number of beneficiaries exceed 60,000 persons (See Chart below).
  • Tamil Language classes arranged in collaboration with the National Youth Services Council at Maharagama and Kelaniya for the members of the Youth Services Council were conducted in August.  A similar programme in Sinhala language was also commenced in Trincomalee and Jaffna. About 150 youth attended the classes at which they are given special lectures on Productivity Leadership, National Integration and Peace Building.  Duration of a class is four months.  Funds for same are provided from the Ministry.
  • Peace Animators who are attached to the Divisions under contract basis were given permanency. They are designated as National Integration Promotion Assistants and now serve in selected Divisions and Districts throughout the country.  Action is being taken to recruit the remaining staff to permanent positions too, as National Integration Assistants, during this year.
