Project for the Compilation of Glossaries of Technical Terms English- Sinhala

At the end of the initial two-year period of the Project which commenced on March 1st 2005, an extension of a further one-year, up to 29th February 2008 has been granted, for the completion of the work which remained unfinished.

The progress made during the initial phase of the project is as follows:

Glossaries of Technical Terms- English - Sinhala made ready for publication.

Aesthetic Education   - I   - Drama and Literature
Aesthetic Education   - II  - Painting and sculpture
Zoology
Environmental Science                     
Surveying 
Environmental Science                     
Surveying

The Dummy proofs have been examined and await correction by the Printer.

It is hoped to bring out these five glossaries in the near future.At the same time it is hoped that the four glossaries of Technical Terms in English-Tamil now with the Government Printer will also be ready to be  brought out .

The progress of the work on the remaining glossaries is as follows.

Linguistics

In order to arrive at a consensus in the use of technical terms, a preliminary discussion was held with Linguists proficient in the different areas of the study, and their cooperation has been sought in compiling an acceptable glossary. 

Pottery and Ceramics

From the simple area of the potter which was covered by the existing glossary, its scope has been expanded to include terms relating to Ceramics, Bio ceramics, Archaeo-ceramics etc. The work in compilation is now in progress.

The compiled glossaries await review, with guidance
from the relevant Consultants 
 
 

Law

The Ministry of Justice has been apprised of the need for the revision of the existing Glossary of Legal Terms, with improvements to bring it in line with the present needs.

Chemistry

Revision of the existing glossary has been completed. It is hoped that the collated new technical terms can be dealt with, within a short time.

Botany

About 50% of the original glossary, with new words, has been completed.



Molecular Biology and Evolution

The original glossary titled Cytology, Genetics and Evolution is being brought up to date under the new title, and the new terms await to be dealt with.

Archeology

The technical terms relating to Archeology, isolated from the old glossary- History and Archeology, together with newly collected technical terms, are being studied with guidance from the Consultant.

Management

About 75% of the work has been completed in this glossary, which has been expanded to cover, together with the present terms on Management, additional areas in Human Resources Management, Production and Marketing Management and Financial Management as well.   

Agriculture

Revision of the existing glossary is over and awaits checking. 

Education

Words collated by reference to the Dictionary on Education and the existing glossary are being reviewed.

Sociology

Revision is in progress

Literary Criticism and Appreciation

Technical Terms are being studied with guidance from the Apex Committee.



English- Tamil Glossaries of Technical Terms

The glossaries on Economics, Linguistics, Communication Studies and Fine Arts, Music and Aesthetics, compiled under the direction of Professor Karthigesu Sivathamby, the Project- Coordinator, after the final proof reading have been approved for printing and are now with the Government Printer. The other English-Tamil glossaries which have been compiled await publication in due course.
